 Attraction of two oppositely charged particles

The basic principle of an Electrostatic Precipitator is the attraction of two oppositely charged particles. The precipitator has two sets of electrodes, one positive and one negative. 

The negative electrodes are in the form of rod or wire mesh, while the positive electrodes are in the form of plates. The positive plates and negative electrodes are placed vertically in the electrostatic precipitator alternatively one after another.

1- An electrostatic precipitator consists of a larger number of discharge electrodes and collecting plates.

2- The discharge electrode is connected to the negative terminal of High voltage DC obtained through a transformer rectifier.

3- The large flat surface collecting plate is connected to the ground.

4- Dust-laden flue gas flows between these two electrodes.

Efficiency of Electrostatic Precipitator

The total function of the Electrostatic precipitator is categorized into 

1. Ionization of dust particles flowing between the electrodes. 

2. Migration and Collection of particles on oppositely charged collecting plates 

3. Removal of particles from the collecting surface to a hopper by vibrating or rapping the collecting surface.

 The efficiency of an electrostatic precipitator depends on factors such as the resistivity of the particles and the corona power ratio. ETIC-ESP are capable of collection efficiencies greater than 99%.

1- Low-Pressure drops of flue gas across ESP.

2- ESP has collection efficiency.

3- Maintenance cost is very less.

4- Silicon control rectifiers allow ESP to operate in auto mode.

1- Can’t be used for gaseous emissions.

2- Space requirement is more.

3- Capital investment is high.

4- Not adaptable to change in operating conditions.
